MELANOTAN I

Melanotan I

Minimum order 2 vials or 2 pens — delivery in 2 weeks
The only molecule in this catalog that's an approved drug in the European Union. And that's exactly why we spell out what was approved — and what wasn't.

Category III — Skin & Beauty 🧮 Reconstitution calculator €61 – €81 from €48.80 to €64.80

Afamelanotide (Melanotan I) is a synthetic analogue of α-MSH and the first approved melanocortin-1 receptor agonist in its class 1.

It's selective for MC1R, the pigment receptor — unlike Melanotan II, which also hits other melanocortin receptors.

It's approved in the European Union for preventing phototoxicity in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria. In the phase III CUV039 trial, patients stayed in sunlight longer without pain 1.

Important clarification: the approved form is a biodegradable 16 mg implant, not an injection, and it isn't intended for tanning healthy skin 1.

Research-use product, outside its approved medical use. Light-sensitive — store in the dark, cold, swirl never shake.

Forget what you've heard about “tanning peptides.” This is the only one with a real approval behind it.

Afamelanotide is selective for MC1R — the pigment receptor — and nothing else. Melanotan II hits more receptors, and that's where its extra effects come from.

In the phase III CUV039 trial, in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria, it increased time in sunlight without pain compared with placebo 1.

Straight talk: it's approved as a 16 mg implant for one specific rare disease — not an injection, not a tanning drug for healthy skin 1.

This is where the conversation moves up a level.

Everything else on this page is a research compound. Not this one. Afamelanotide — Melanotan I — is a synthetic analogue of α-MSH and the first-in-class melanocortin-1 receptor agonist, and it's approved in the European Union 1.

For what, exactly. For the prevention of phototoxicity in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria — a rare disease in which light causes real pain. In the phase III CUV039 trial, patients were able to spend more time in direct sunlight without pain, and time to first symptom under a standardized light source increased versus placebo 1.

Now read the form carefully. What was approved is a biodegradable 16 mg controlled-release implant, placed under the skin 1. It is not an injection, it is not for tanning, and it is not for healthy skin. Anything presented to you elsewhere as “the approved tanning drug” is exploiting exactly this confusion.

Tolerability. In the phase III trial no serious drug-related adverse events were reported; the common ones were headache and implant-site reactions, and the safety data were consistent with the earlier phase III studies 1.

How it differs from Melanotan II. Melanotan I is selective for MC1R — the pigment receptor. Melanotan II also hits other melanocortin receptors, and that's where its extra effects come from — and its extra side effects. A more targeted molecule isn't a weaker one.

The approval and all the data concern a 16 mg implant for erythropoietic protoporphyria. There's no approved indication for tanning, and no comparable data.
