An α-MSH analogue, designed to activate melanocytes without the trigger of UV radiation. A natural tan is a response to DNA damage; here the trigger is bypassed and only the result remains.
The mechanism isn't selective: the molecule activates more than one melanocortin receptor, not just the one responsible for pigment.
The number that backs it up: in a pilot phase I study, pigmentation on the face, torso and buttocks was measured by quantitative reflectance — and was still measurable one week after administration ended 1.
