The numbers — and they're impressive. 24-month-old mice — that is, aged — with an induced injury to the tibialis anterior. With an NNMT inhibitor: proliferation of muscle stem cells, muscle fiber cross-sectional area nearly doubled, and — most importantly, because it's functional rather than histological — peak muscle torque about 70% higher than in control animals 1.
And in a second study, in diet-induced obese mice: an NNMT inhibitor together with a switch to a low-fat diet accelerated fat loss and brought body composition and liver fat back to the levels of age-matched control animals that had always eaten low-fat 2. Note the wording: together with the diet, not instead of it.
And the two “buts,” side by side. First and biggest: it's all in mice. No human studies. Second, subtler but essential: the studies talk about “an NNMT inhibitor” — the class 5-amino-1MQ belongs to — without naming the molecule in their abstracts 12. It's fair to say the class showed these results. It's not fair to say this exact molecule did.
