In men. 37 were randomized, 32 completed, mean age 37.9 years, all with diagnosed hypoactive sexual desire disorder. While viewing sexual stimuli, kisspeptin modulated activity in key structures of the sexual-processing network (Cohen d = 0.81; P = 0.003). And it didn't stop at brain imaging: erections increased by up to 56% more than with placebo (P = 0.02), and self-reported happiness about sex went up (P = 0.02) 1.
In women, from the same team, with the same protocol. 40 premenopausal women with the same diagnosis, 32 completed. Kisspeptin altered the processing of both erotic stimuli and facial attractiveness. And the most interesting finding of the whole study: the greater each woman's distress about her sexual function at baseline, the greater the enhancement in her hippocampus (r = 0.469; P = 0.007). In other words, it worked more where the problem was actually there. No adverse effects were reported 2.
Now the “but”, and it's a serious one — don't skip it. Both studies used kisspeptin-54, intravenously, as a continuous 75-minute infusion 12. What's sold here is kisspeptin-10: the short active end of the same molecule, same receptor — but a different molecule, a different route, a much shorter half-life. The reason the researchers set up a seventy-five-minute infusion is exactly this: kisspeptin clears fast.
It's not the same thing as what was tested, and we won't tell you it is. It's the same system.
